Separation of Church and State
United States Constitution Amendment 1 (1791)"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of of religion, or prohibiting the exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievance.
Nowhere in the above amendment does it state that the church is separate from the State, or Government. I interpret the amendment as, the government will not designate one religion to be the official religion of the United States, and the people of the United States can exercise the customs and beliefs of the religion they choose as free people.
As a municipal employee of the Catholic religion who wears a St. Florian chain as it is the patron saint of firefighters, are those who believe there should be a separation between Church and State do I need to take my chain off while on duty? Wouldn't that be you prohibiting the exercise of my religion?

God, the supreme being; a divinity; a deity.(New Expanded Webster's Dictionary 1991 Edition).
So, we have learned a religion needs a God,(Note: no formal name),with a system of faith and worship. Atheist is not a religion because there is no God nor form of worship, Agnostic disclaim the existence of God, God exists they choose not to believe, and they have no form of worship, so both atheist and Agnostic people have no religion. The First Amendment would not cover the Agnostics nor the atheists and the atheists and Agnostics cannot force the people who believe and worship a God to not practice their religions.
The idea of making Government take the word God or any hint there of, out of Government items is ludicrous. I have seen the President of the United States Pray, some Government functions start with Prayer and there is no place in the first Amendment that states it is wrong to have God and Government together. Noone is forcing anyone to believe in one religion and there is noone that is forcing anyone to practice a religion.

Freedom of religion AND freedom from religion. I do not want some Pat Roberton or Jerry Falwell lover getting in my face because I am not "Christian" in their minds because I am Catholic.
Also beware of those who worship Government like a Deity. Can we say COMMUNISM?
I'm opposed to religion in government, but I am opposed to certain government officials (read Roy Moore) trying to force religion down the throats of people. I'm not opposed to Ten Commandments monuments on public property, provided they meet one of two conditions:
1. They are part of a display of historically significant legal documents (and, therefore, the Ten Commandments would be shown in an ancient language instead of English).
2. They are historically significant. There are many Ten Commandments displays in the U.S. in courtrooms and public buildings, dating from a period when it was safe to assume that everyone was a member of an Abrahamic religion (typically 1920's-1930's).
Those who argue that the Ten Commandments form the basis of our system of laws obviously haven't read either the laws or the Commandments lately.
The Pledge of Allegiance issue is more complicated, since the words "under God" were an anti-communist addition to the original socialist declaration. I have much bigger problems with the Pledge than the words "under God":
1. Pledging allegiance to a flag before the nation itself seems backward to me.
2. Constitutionally the states are sovereign, not the federal government, so "one nation" is misleading.
Oh, and I love the irony that the "indivisible" nation is divided because of the two words inserted before it.
I couldn't care less if you wear a necklace, collar, robes, or war paint while doing your job, if that's part of your religion (as long as it doesn't affect your ability to do it).
I would prefer not to have to deal with some public religious observances, such as the prayers before high school and college football games, but it isn't a big deal.
